2020.09.11 04:03 anNof1 MURS, FRS, GMRS, or othRS?

Hi everyone. New to prepping and trying to figure out best walkie talkies for my situation.
I live in hilly suburbs with a backup/long term redoubt(the in-laws) about 8 miles away.
My current thoughts are to go FRS because cheep units and no licensing so I could buy a few to coordinate security with the neighbors in a SHTF scenario plus they would be useful even if no collapse ever happens.
Going GMRS I guess has the advantage of more power and more channels and would work with any cheaper FRS units for the same security purpose. But the bigger price tag and licensing requirement is a bit of a detractor for me.
MURS having the antenae extension allowance has the potential for actually being able to communicate with the in-laws despite lower power, but I'm wondering if in a SHTF scenario those five channels will be too packed to communicate anyways. The units are also a bit too pricy to buy extras for the neighbors plus I've heard despite the similar powers they suffer more structural attenuation.
As a side note I've also been given a few old Motorola Radius SP50s which I'm uncertain about the legality of operating for personal use (itinerant frequencies) but I'm not sure I'll care about a $10K fine once hyperinflation hits anyways so I am thinking about just playing around with their capability for long range and stick with the cheepy FRS as planned to start with.
TL;DR what kind of two-way radios should I buy that make the most sense for everything from family outings and hunting to TEOTWAWKI?

2020.08.31 09:32 Thnewkid What’s the point?

So I bought a baofeng. I’m messing around with listening in on different frequencies and figuring out how it works and it’s been super entertaining. I’m in the process of studying for a license too, and while I’m probably going to get it, I’m starting to question what the actual utility of HAM radio is.
I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s pretty interesting and having the license to access all these channels and frequencies and to be able to communicate across the country, world, with space, etc. is pretty cool and is obviously useful. But for what?
First off, I originally became interested because my cheap Motorola walkie-talkies finally fell apart. They never had the range I wanted and the signal stopped if you put a houseplant between the two. More power is better, right? On top of that, I’m trying to do more outdoors stuff deeper in the backcountry (and some solo camping) and if I needed to contact emergency services, or get a weather report, a HAM radio would give me a better shot at it. Im frequently in places without cell service and as much as I like to completely disconnect from civilization, having the ability to call for help is just smart. On top of that, in my urban setting, I’ve lost most cell service while there are large local events and I can imagine in the event of a disaster I would not be able to rely on cell service.
So this is where my questions start. What utility am I really gaining? If I’m out in the mountains and have an accident, I can legally use my radio to call for help where I could not with a phone. Great. However, say I end up skiing with some friends in the backcountry and we have a few people spread out or somebody back at the resort that we want to talk to, if we’re having a conversation and we have to keep IDing ourselves every 10 minutes it just sounds super inconvenient. For that we should just get MURS radios, right? But then why does the HAM license not allow us to use our more powerful radios on those frequencies? I get why the unlicensed radios are locked in, so they don’t start transmitting all over the place, but if we’re licensed to operate radios to a higher proficiency why doesn’t that allow us to use “lesser” open frequencies as well with our better gear? Shouldn’t it be a tiered system with carve-outs for business and govt. use? It seems like Ham radio is not for talking. I get the usefulness for emergencies, but if I’m not able to really use my radio for general purpose use am I really going to be proficient enough when an emergency comes up?
Maybe I’m missing something, and I probably am, but it feels like amateur radio exists for just talking to other random licensed operators for fun and then for emergency use while there’s a huge gap for less serious, but utilitarian use in the middle.

2020.07.26 08:12 Admirable-Salt Anyone know how to fix requesting loading assistance on a register?

I’m a head cashier at my store and for a few weeks now, anytime a cashier hits loading assistance on the register, nothing comes across on the walkie talkies we give the lot associates. Our OPS manager ordered new walkie talkies thinking it may be those, but the new ones don’t work either. I thought maybe there was a communication issue between the serveregister to the walkies, so I turned the Motorola box in the server room off and on again and they still don’t work. When trying to call IT, they kept transferring me to different places saying it’s a hardware issue, it’s a software issue, it’s a POS issue, blah blah until I was on hold for half an hour and had to hang up. I know there’s numbers on the Motorola box 1-4, and changing those don’t seem to make a difference. If anyone has any idea on how to fix this, it’s much appreciated.

2020.07.24 18:55 CosmoBMW Production Walkie Talkies

Currently we have three industrial plants and we want to implement walkie talkies that can be clear even around machinery, from a great distance, and in freezers. We were quoted by a company to improve our current 12 walkie talkies with a $5,000 setup that would basically expand the signal because we could not use the walkie talkies from plant 1 to plant 3 due to distance. Money is obviously an object but we understand this can get expensive. It would be preferred if we can can just use the devices rather then a signal booster on the roofs, etc. Any help would be amazing, plant distance (currently have the Motorola RMU2040)

2020.07.04 04:36 UPSBossMan Nurse needs help making uv5rs talk to walkie talkies

Hello, everyone! I'm new here, and new to baofeng radios.
I'm a nurse working in one of the many near-overrun hospitals in Texas. To aid communication during codes and such, our units got walkie talkies. It wasn't a unified effort, so we have a moge-poge of various brands and styles.
I work as a code nurse, so I respond to all of the units, which means I need to be able to talk to a lot of different radios. I got a pair of UV5Rs because I read that they are programmable and I figured I could make them talk to all the other radios. I programed them using a frequency chart I found online.
Some of the walkie talkies can hear me but can't talk to me, and some can talk but not listen to me. I figured it was "privacy channels" so I turned those off, but that did not help.
I then tried scanning frequencies on the uv5r and broadcasting the walkie talkie, but I never picked up the signal from the walkie talkie.
I'm on low power mode, trying to talk at a range of 15-20 feet, indoors. The Motorolas and similar seem to have no issue in this environment, but everyone seems to have a pair of radios talking to each other.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I'd love to be able to make my radio work, but so far I can only reliably talk to my other uv5r.
Thanks for any help yall can provide 👍

2020.05.25 00:16 Xylorio When I was 10, I heard voices coming from a lost walkie-talkie.

I used to live in this old apartment, mostly full of parents and old people. I had a couple of friends their, lets say their names are Mark and Mary.
One day Mark and I decided to have fun in the forest that was behind the apartment, so we grabbed the walkie-talkie set that I just got for Christmas the last year, when we were walking across the parking lot to get to the woods, we saw Mary taking out garbage, she wanted to join to. (She was always the most curious one out of the friend group and always wanted to know what me and Mark were up to.) The set of walkie-talkies were the Motorola 3-set, which there are different channels, so while in the woods we kept switching to see if we could hear anybody's conversations. When we did, it wasn't glitchy or anything, so it was definitely close by.
After getting bored of that, we decided to play a hide and seek game where you had to give the seeker one hint about where you are. We had landmarks like dead-fall and Christmas tree to give hints. I was hiding nearby a fallen over tree-house, so my hint was "a place where you hang out" because 10 year old me couldn't come up with some escape-room clue that you had to decode, but it worked. Mark found Mary first, cause she was just having a time in a tree. I guess "look up" was a bad clue. Now Mark and Mary teamed up on me, so the first place they looked was the 'base'. The 'base' was kind of just like a garbage dump, like shopping carts and chairs, so of course that would be a place to hang out.
The forest was dense, so you couldn't see anybody behind a tree, the trail was the basically the only spot to see the sun, but I have been in there so many times that only the night gives me the creeps.
Of course, Mark and Mary found me. My legs were getting cramped sitting beside a tree-house snickering at them communicating over a walkie-talkie. For the next round Mary didn't wan't to be it, so I volunteered. Now this isn't scary, they just told clues and I found them. It was just a repetitive cycle, but when Mary was finally it, I heard Mark (over the walkie-talkie) say that he's bored. Obviously. So we all got up from our hiding places, challenged for a race back to the apartment, and took off. Now, me and Mary were carrying the walkie-talkies, while Mark just had his clipped to his pocket. When he was running, it fell off.
When we were back at the parking lot, I said they could keep the walkie-talkies for if we wanted to communicate through the different floors. Mark didn't say anything, either because he didn't notice or he didn't want to et in trouble with my parents. My parents didn't like Mark for a variety of reasons, but it would take a while to type out all, so I'm not going to bother.
Later that night, before our bed time at 8:30, me and Mary were trying to get Mark on. 'He must have it turned off.' was my first thought, but then I went and knocked on his door. He said he didn't have it. My parents were going to kill me if I didn't have it. But the only excuse I had was that I let Mark take it, but they didn't like Mark. So I only had one plan.
After telling my parents I was having a sleepover at Mary's house, I grabbed a flashlight, another walkie-talkie and left.
Like I said, I am paranoid of this woods at night, so I just stood at the edge of it and beamed my flashlight around. When I turned on my walkie-talkie, I could hear Mary talking, to what? I listened closely and it sounded like she was having a conversation with...
Me?
I didn't want to talk anymore, I was shivering too much, if I talked would that thing find me? If I didn't talk would Mary tell something? It was an exact replica of my voice, the only thing different was it sounded older, just by like 2 years. It's important to know I kind of talk funny, squeaky in a way. But this thing managed to perfectly replicate my voice and was screwing with Mary.
I could not stand near the edge of that thing's home. I ran back to the main entrance of the apartment as fast as I could. I felt my heart pounding, I was trembling. Thank God i left the door open.
I ran to Mary's house, soaked in sweat she let me in. "Who was that" said the voice on the walkie-talkie." Mary looked at me. I didn't speak into the walkie-talkie. She looked like she was going to scream. "Wh- who was tha - that?" she said. I felt completely useless in this situation. If I hadn't have took the walkie-talkies would this have happened?
Till this day, I still have nightmares over this. Yes this is real. Do my parents believe this? No. Do me Mary, and Mark? Yes. This was one of the most scary moments of my life and I'll never forget what happened in with those walkie-talkies.

2020.04.16 14:39 DyersvilleStLambert Vehicle Antennas

I'm new to GMRS radios (my last real radio experience was with the PRC 77).
I've entered this area sort of accidentally as a long time ago I picked up a couple of old Cobra handheld "walkie talkies" and more recently went to a couple of better Motorola handhelds. I wanted to be able to communicate with those from my vehicles, so I recently picked up a Midland MXT115 at a local store and got my license. I meant to get the MXT400 on the assumption that the more watts the better. The MXT115 works really well with the Motorolas and I'm getting decent range out of them, clear reception out to at least four miles, and on one odd occasion made contact at at least fifteen miles. I'm in an area that's very hilly or even mountainous by some definitions.
I've looked here and elsewhere and it seems like antennas are the real key for range. I'm using a MXTA26 6db 32" antenna on a Jeep, with it mounted to a wind fairing so that its as high on the Jeep as it can get. I'm going to add a second antenna to a Dodge 3500 and was more or less thinking of going with the same antenna, but I'll confess my memory of radio antennas is pretty impacted by the old whip antennas used for Jeep mounts for the old PRC 77.
What antenna for a 4x4 vehicle would people recommend here.

2020.04.04 20:58 JohnnyMrNinja Monitoring two-way radio over internet

A lot of retail chains, production facilities, etc. use 2-way radios (or walkie-talkies) like the Motorola RMU2040 or similar. With the current situation, I'm wondering about a cheap option to monitor and respond to the radio chatter within a specific location. I'm hoping there's some way for salaried employees working from home to actively contribute to a reduced labor staff. But it's something I want to test out for myself before I bring to the rest of my organization.
