I removed Heroes by David Bowie because it already played once before (Season 3, Penelope) I will double check every episode on my rewatch). I listed the final three seasons as they aired without repeating songs. I’ll have a deeper listen to every song when I have the chance. Although not heard lyrically, the unsub (Charles Holcombe) from Season 2, Legacy whistles the song from Sweeney Todd, so I counted it.

2019.07.25 11:21 craftylamma Fallout: New California Quick Start Guide

Welcome to the tutorial for Fallout: New California! First off, some notes.
Fallout New California has some set rules for your game, so listen closely.
  1. Ensure your game launcher is set to LARGE textures
  2. Ensure you have MORE than 8GB of RAM
  3. Ensure you have MORE than 3GB of VRAM
  4. Ensure your computer meets the RECOMMENDED settings for New Vegas
  5. Ensure you read this guide to it’s completion before reporting a bug.
Follow those and you should be good.
If you have the Steam version of the game then you can’t run most mods, this included, without the 4GB patcher, luckily, our magical EXE does it for you! The EXE will install the 4GB patch and if it’s already there, try to update it! We don’t support DVD versions of the game, sorry. We just can’t, it’s not possible for us to edit the data folder in the disc, You need to have Steam or GOG.
There are no language restrictions, mostly. The game is ONLY in American English, and we used to require that version of the game but any region will work. Just remember that the spoken language will be US English. We are working on subtitle translation patches for multiple languages.
Do NOT run from FalloutNVLauncher.exe
Do NOT run from your mod manager unless it is set to launch FalloutNV.exe
Do NOT run from nvse_loader.exe
Do NOT run from 4gbpatch.exe
Only Run From FalloutNV.exe
Remember, FNC can be run by itself, nothing here is required, you don’t even need the official DLC for the game! New California was made to be played by anyone who owned the game and wanted more story, so you don’t need anything listed here at all if you don’t want it.
Sadly, FNC is incompatible with some mods, we don’t know why, we wish we did, but we can’t solve every conflict or know of every problem, so remember that if something is going wrong, there may be a problem with other mods.
EVERY UPDATE REQUIRES A NEW SAVE FILE! A lot of people complain about bugs when migrating versions so remember that every time a new version is released and installed you must start a new game.
If you ever want to uninstall Fallout New California, there’s no hard feelings! You can find an EXE to do just that in your New Vegas Directory! A file will be named FONCUninstall .exe, run it and it’s gone. Make sure to reinstall Fallout New Vegas completely for the cleanest version!
So you want to play with mods? We don’t blame you, it’s Fallout, you *need* mods. To play it, I mean. It’s almost a requirement now. We have a small list of really fun and Incompatible mods you can or can’t use. Some Really Fun Mods
Incompatible Mods
Note: If you don’t have all of the DLC, your game will not load properly, disable all DLC if you are missing any of them and make sure you disable the DLC and Courier Stash control esp files also. This is the only time you should disable a mod.
Your Load Order is especially important with FNC, it can make or break your game, so take a look at how your load order should be:
All Official DLC (including the item packs)
All Other ESM files
All Other ESP files
New California DLC Control.esp
New California Courier Stash Control
As a special little note for some people, we do have replacements for the Fallout 4 Quick Loot and Ghoulified, found Here and Here respectively.

So, you installed YUP, good choice, it’s a good mod, and works great with FNC, but there are special Load Order instructions that need to be followed. While the load order above is correct, there are a few changes that need to be made. Make sure your load order is as follows if using YUP
YUP Base Game + All DLC.esm
All Other ESM Files
All Other ESP Files
New California DLC Control.esp
New California Courier Stash Control.esp
YUP NPC Fixes (Base Game + All DLC).esp

Actually Playing

Yes, actually playing has a section. So, you got the game, you got the mods, got FNC all downloaded. Next is getting it working.
MO2 Users: You need to edit your Fallout.ini IN MO2 to make sure your Fallout.ini has the third line set to
sCharGenQuest: 00AD31FF
Congratulations, you have some mods and your game, that’s great! But you’re having trouble with actually playing, this next bit will cover that.

So you’ve got your mods, you know your system is up to par, and you hit play, but nothing happens, or the game opens but then crashes, or you get to the main menu and it CTDs (Crash To Desktop) or you even hit play, watch the opening video and get to the Atrium in Vault 18 before a total system Blue Screen. The Blue Screen (BSOD) is a worst case scenario and to be honest, probably won’t happen. But if the others happen, you need to know what to do and how to fix it.
If your game will not launch, or your FPS is low or the game does not render properly, take a look at this cool definitive guide on FPS and Stability for FNV found Here
If your game crashes when you enter the Atrium (When you hit New Game) then it means your install went wrong and the 4GB patch was installed wrong, you have too many mods, or not enough RAM. Try uninstalling some mods or reinstalling FNC. (Never disable a mod, always uninstall.)
Did you set your load order correctly? If you don’t know, open your mod manager to find out. If you don’t have a mod manager, get one! We recommend Vortex!
This isn’t a good situation, when playing FNC, make sure your game is NOT installed to your Program Files, move it to a separate directory or drive and try again. (This often include reinstalling the game to a new location)
That’s Probably a mod or New California is too low in your load order. Make sure that your load order is sorted exactly as listed above, no other orders will work, if using Vortex, you may need to disable the Autosort function. If it still didn’t work, turn off all of your mods and just load New California and Fallout New Vegas, if it works, turn on the mods one by one and find the culprit and exile it.
That’s not supposed to happen. Open your fallout.ini (in Documents\My Games\FalloutNV) and ensure the third line reads: SCharGenQuest=00AD31FF and make sure your load order is correct!
Do you have other mods installed? Are they Alternate Start mods? GET RID OF THEM! Are you trying to run TTW with FNC? WE TOLD YOU NO!
Still not working? Try reinstalling your game and going from the start.
Did you break something? Are you running a mod we said is incompatible? Are you running this on a toaster? Unlike DOOM, this game was not made to run on anything, make sure you have 8GB of RAM and 3GB of VRAM before you play. If you are unsure of your VRAM, google your video card. If you’re unsure of your video card, open the Run dialog and type dxdiag, head to the Display page and your Video Card name will be at the top, ironically, with your VRAM!
When in doubt, close it. Literally everything except Fallout should be open. ESPECIALLY WEB BROWSERS. Chrome and Microsoft Edge may look nice but they take up too much RAM to be good for your system.
Try restarting your PC! Honestly, it’s an old joke but it works most of the time.
OH NO! That’s real bad. Uninstall Fallout New Vegas and try again.
Sorry, this content is not available in your region! I’m kidding, uninstall the mod and reinstall but run the installer as Administrator! Look at the stuff! Listen to the words! Walk on the things! Oh, it didn’t work? Reinstall New Vegas and try again.
Amazing! Well done! As a reward, have enough XP to level you up! Send a message on Discord saying +24601 XP for a reward!
They certainly are! Join our discord and send us your save file (Same place as fallout.ini) and make sure you’ve read all of the above instructions. No Joke, they’re important. We don’t need NVSE files, just the one with .fos at the end, it stands for Fallout Save.

We used quite a lot of modder resources all over. Please check in with them before sharing their assets.
We also purchased/commissioned some a few assets to use in this mod. Don't distribute those under any circumstance, especially the music!
The vast majority of the art assets are scratch made by Thaiauxn, so ask him if you want to re-use them in a mod or Fallout 4. The answer is usually yes, but check to make sure.
(Satire, parody, review, and news are totally acceptable however.)
File credits
All assets merged with written permission.
Roy -- 4GB Patch -- Critical for our mod to work for Steam Users.
GECK PU -- We've used it for years, tested it, reported bugs, and contributed to it.
Zizlav -- Invaluable contributions to our project.
xEdit -- ElminsterAU -- We'd be dead without it. Used it literally every day for 7 years.
HeroinZero -- features in several of our videos while I was using it personally, but is not in the mod.
EdibleGrenade12 -- Thaiauxn made the textures and modular elements. Jack made it explode.
Rudy ENB -- Used in all our videos and screenshots.
Dragbody -- Elements appear only in our ending videos. Dragbody is a core team member.
Jokerine -- Only appears in the ending video
SariDecember -- Only appears in the ending video
LostRider -- Only appears in the ending video
Vurts -- Used with permission and heavily modified.
skibadaa -- super grateful for these! Used with permission and modified.
deedes -- features predominantly on all hanging bodies.
Andi_669 -- Fixed that arm for us!
tapioks -- Accidentally merged these once and went back to ask permission because I'm really lazy sometimes. Then Jack made it explode.
Toasty Fresh -- used with permission and modified to fix transparency issues and environment maps.
Pixel Hate -- Pixel is a regular contributer to our mod.
zzjay -- zzjay contributed a lot of body mod resources and fixes. I contributed the textures.
Nouks and Apachiis hairstyles via zzjay with permission from Apachii and the help of zzjay and NoNoodles
hagyjalbeken -- Where we got some of our hats and glasses! I made the icons and Zu made the world models. Thaiauxn retextured a few.
ZuTheSkunk -- I love ZuTheSkunk. Made many valuable contributions to our mod.
The M-40 gas mask (ended up retexturing it and replacing the mesh) with permission. Ultimately replaced it with a new model. Thank you!
Drumber -- borrowed several textures from him, and he from us.
devilswish182 -- not in our mod, but used in several videos.
Tau34RUS -- Appears in ending videos and/or in the mod itself. Vlad is a core team member!
Lord Inquisitor -- Heavily modified and used in the mod frequently on our super mutants, with re-textures from Vlad or Thaiauxn.
Macintroll -- Merged with our assets. Max is a regular contributer on the team.
Q's Resources -- Used with permission. ALPHA features predominantly with heavy modifications
lordzues40 -- Used with permission and heavily modified.
daejones -- Left a comment saying we should used them and they sat unused for years til we put them to use. Features predominantly here and there.
vivanto -- Ended up not using it and fully retexured the one in New Vegas.
Riven1978 -- Needed a fat guy. :p Now works rarely to provide giant unintended dong based hilarity.
SGHi -- Merged long ago and heavily modified over the years. Features predominantly.
UrgeNexus -- Can't remember if we actually used this anywhere but it's in our files.
bibbeh -- We actually got it from bibbeh in the Fallout 3 days and then heavily modified it into a unique mesh and texture.
AnsaarTGB -- is in my list but I don't think anything actually made it into New California?
Mesh Magnet -- Purchased assets off Turbosquid with permission to use.
eomanv -- The Gatling canon, and heavily modified over time.
pilamin -- LOD Assets -- Used and Replaced without own; not merged with out mod; additional parts made on request -- thanks!
Emalphi -- Only ever featured in our trailer. Lucien was using it and his video clip made it in. Figured i'd credit just in case.
kibblesticks -- Never actually used the camera, but thank you anyway!
Marcurios -- Was on our team for a while. Made a lot of our terrain textures. Apparently left because he didn't get enough credit? What? Well, here you go!
Scott Mack and Dragbody -- Several assets from who knows where, but the Black Vulture's armour uses boots from Stalker, and I think a couple creatures as well.
Lord of War -- Rigged and provided by Dragbody -- features predominantly on all NCR troopers. Never did get the female versions. :p
YanL -- Only ever used the Ranger gear and heavily modified it and Thaiauxn provided all new textures head to toe.
Wattz 2000 Laser Rifle -- Recently aquired for 210!

2019.03.07 00:47 kungming2 Post-AMA Writeup of Questions & Answers

ICYMI, we had an AMA (Ask Me Anything) today with the Pixelberry Studios Team and once again, we thank them (u/playchoices) for coming on and chatting with us!

I've put together a somewhat organized list of questions and answers for people to reference (especially for the Wiki) and to group together related topics as best I could. (Let me know if there are any corrections that need to be made!)

Book-related Questions

A Courtesan of Rome

Can you please confirm whether A Courtesan Of Rome will be one book, or multiple? Or has this not even been decided yet?
This came up in the Inside Choices, but I guess I wasn't super clear (sorry). The finale chapters after the hiatus will conclude your historical adventures in Rome. We currently aren't planning on a Book 2, but it's been a blast exploring Ancient Rome with all of you! The team is working super hard to create an awesome finale! -Jessica
Will we get the chance to stab Caesar during the Ides of march, ergo the real date of his death? (Maybe not this year but in the future?) -Chelsa
Why did ACOR go on hiatus? 😭 will we get a book 2, or is it just two parts? Marc Antony isn’t a red herring LI like Nathan, right?
A Courtesan of Rome returns in late spring with its concluding chapters for the book. We don't have plans for a Book 2 currently, but we're hoping you'll enjoy all the epic stuff the team has planned for the last few chapters. (Seriously, it's mindblowing. Cleopatra!!) Generally speaking, we'll sometimes put books on shorter breaks or longer hiatuses to give our writing, art, QA and other teams enough time to make the best chapters possible without placing too much pressure on said teams. We know that the delays can be a disappointment, and we're really sorry about that, but we never make these decisions on a whim. At the end of the day, we're in this for the long-term, and that means doing what's best for our teams. - Jessica

Desire & Decorum

Specifically for the D&D and ACoR writers, what were some interesting things you guys learned about in your research?
I can’t speak on the ACoR side, but for D&D, it was really interesting researching about the secret language of the hand fan! I don’t know if I buy into all this “secret” gesture stuff, but the dictionary for it all is quite fascinating. Also, did you know that the word “Hello” wasn’t around until the 1840s? But it didn’t become a popular greeting until the 1880s, which coincided with the rise of the telephone! -Rachel
Also, in the early days of D&D, Rachel took me to a regency dance class. It was wild. -Jessica
In the PB blog post about D&D II, there was an allusion to a scene that had been conceived very early on (maybe as early as Book I). Was that scene the duel scene or a scene yet to unfold?
Yes! That was the duel! -Rachel

The Elementalists

Who is your favorite Elementalists character?
T I M -Andrew
Also Tim -Jessica
Will there be more Aster in book 2 of the Elementalists? I love her.
yes! We love her too and we’re so happy to finally be able to bring Aster in as a full time student. This is something we’ve been planning since the start of the series, so we’re glad to continue the story with her being more involved. - Chelsa
What was your thought process behind the sexuality choice in The Elementalists? It was super cool to let us pick our sexuality for the first time in any book! Will we see it in future books? Also, why did you still include romance scenes ignoring the choice later on?
You'll see it again in The Elementalists: Book 2! So the thought process initially was to give players who were romantically interested in specific genders a way to avoid certain romantic interactions and play a story more tailored to them. The hookup scenes at the tail end of the book weren't at all intended to ignore that choice. We considered the choice at the start to be specifically about your romantic interests, versus sexual preference. Of course, we always have room to grow, and will definitely look at how to further improve this option going forward! -Chelsa
Will the sexuality options for the MC be present in book 2 of The Elementalists?
yes! -Chelsa
I was wondering what everyone's attunement was from The Elementalists?
Earth-att -Jessica
Fire. Surprising no one -Kathleen
Air-att -Chelsa
I’m Tim -Andrew
I love the magical system ("attunements") you came up with for "The Elementalists". What alternative systems were discarded when you decided on that one?
We came up with a huuuuuuuge list of different magic systems and tried to narrow down some ideas from there. I went in knowing that i wanted it to involve elements and kind of show the relationship between magic and science in a unique way that I hadn’t really seen before. The one thing that we really wanted to put our own spin on was the idea of “wands” which have their own sort of power in the magickal world but aren’t used at all anymore as a result of the Wand Wars. (More on that in TE Book 2!) -Chelsa
When TE came out, a lot of people compared it to Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is pretty funny because our intrepid book lead has actually never watched it! We've got a running joke on the team where we make obscure A:TLA references specifically to drive Chelsa up the wall. -Jessica
Any chance we could get the Their team captain (AKA Hottie McHot Hot Hot) as a love interest?
Sorry, Everett doesn't date underclassmen. 😢

Endless Summer

To the writers: which is your personal favourite ending for Endless Summer and why?
CONTROVERSIAL HOT TAKE but my favorite is the Rourke Wins ending! I know it’s ‘the bad ending’, but in a lot of ways, I kind of think it’s the most hopeful, because it sets up the possibility that the characters will all find each other again and work together to take down Rourke on a grand new adventure - Andrew
In the chapter of book 1 of Endless Summer where you have to find Iris’ name, would anything have happened if you told her the name she had before? Rot13 for spoilers: Vzbtra Ebhexr
Oh wow that is a DEEP pull. Uhhhh, I’m going to say nothing would have happened because the operating system only accepted the name IRIS? - Andrew
I want a Endless Summer 3 pt movie.
Why not a musical theatre production? -Rachel
Does Quinn still think about me?
Every day - Andrew

Will we ever get a hero book 2? (:
Yes. -Rachel

The Heist: Monaco

Hey Owen, will there be a sequel to The Heist: Monaco?
That's classified 😛
Why is Sonia so attractive?
Because our artists are FANTASTIC! -Rachel

It Lives Beneath

In ILB, can the MC having low nerve actually prevent them from even TRYING to escape the coffin in chapter 17?
I mean, you can always TRY to escape the coffin, but if your Nerve is too low, it’s not gonna go well. 😈 -Kathleen

The Royal Romance

Was Maxwell from The Royal Romance always planned to be a love interest or was that decided later?
Books are planned and outlined well before launch, and we generally don’t change plans based on fan reception. We’ve got a road map and we stick to it! Of course, that doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate and value fan feedback; it just means that we tend to take a long-term, more big-picture view towards reacting to fan feedback. The one exception to the rule is of course, Maxwell from The Royal Romance -- and even that took a lot more planning and forethought than I think readers realize. -Andrew
It wasn't planned, but over time, he charmed us so much that we just had to include him! And of course, we loved the passionate fan reception to him. That being said, the process for making Maxwell a love interest happen started out pretty early! - Jennifer
From a scale of 1-10 how likely is it that Drake Walker will still be sporting a denim shirt in the TRR spinoff?
100% -Kara
Would he be Drake Walker without a denim shirt? -Jennifer
TRR Question that I had on my mind since book 1, specifically for Kara if she can answer. Was Olivia from the series intended to be an LI at one point during conception but scrapped? If so, what was the thought process behind that? Noted how MC can bluntly say "I'd actually rather date you" at the end of the book moments before possibly winning Liam's hand and always made me wonder if her as a 4th/5th LI after Maxwell was intended as some point.
We didn’t have any plans beyond the first three Love Interests for TRR when we started it, but we didn’t want your dynamic with Olivia to feel forced into being purely antagonistic. One of my favorite things about Olivia and Riley’s interactions is that you can usually be snarky back to her or sweet, sassy, or silly even from the beginning before your friendship with her really starts forming. Some of the funniest paths to me are when you’re silly or sweet to Olivia because it’s something that she’s just so not used to. -Kara

Would there be some type of option for accessorizing the MC’s in the future? I.e: adding Glasses, tattoos, a color palette for hairstyles etc..
Yes! We definitely have some more customization options coming up... including some that I think will be quite a surprise.
I would like to ask if there will be a possibility of choosing different haircolours for the hairstyles we are offered in the books. For example, having the ability to pick the same hairstyle in blonde and brown or maybe even some other colours. Would this be a possibility that you would consider in the foreseeable future?
This is something we’ll look into! - Andrew
Of the newly announced books that aren’t yet released, which are you most excited for fans to experience and why?
I’m super-hyped for Nightbound because if y’all like sexy monsters, we’ve got sexy monsters. I’m also very hyped for a Top Secret New Project that hasn’t been announced yet but pushes Choices in a new direction that I think fans will really enjoy! -Andrew
Also Nightbound! Though, I am really hyped for Wishful Thinking because I don’t know too much about the story -Chelsa
Nightboooooooouuuund -Kathleen
I’m excited to see what people will think about Passport to Romance. -Jennifer
I can’t wait for Wishful Thinking! I mean… look at the emus!! -Rachel
Have you thought about doing more books with the art style of Hero and Endless Summer?
Different art styles are definitely something we’re looking into! - Andrew
Will we get more books with a polyamory option?
Yes! - Andrew
Relating to my last question, have you ever considered making an in - game surveys ? Like you can make an option about attempting a survey within the app for different topics ? You can get valuable feedback directly from the players and in return, you can give a small diamond reward in accordance to the length of the survey.
This might be something we’re looking into! - Andrew
Are we going to get more trans representation in future or currently updating books?
Yes! - Andrew
Why are you not selling merchandise? I really, really want some Hartfeld stationery!
Can we choose our gender in Passport to Romance, Nightbound, and Wishful Thinking?
Nightbound and Passport to Romance will both have male/female main character options. Wishful Thinking will center a heroine main character. Now you know! #RedditExclusive -Jessica
What is the planned genre of Wishful Thinking?
“Quirky romcom” sayeth the Wishful Thinking lead. -Jessica
In Nightbound, are we a human or something else?
My lips are sealed -Andrew
Any upcoming genres you’re excited for?
Oh yeah. We’ve got some very very exciting stuff planned. I’m not allowed to share much so I’ll just say… we can’t wait til you SEA what we’ve got in store - Andrew
Will we be seeing more historical fiction books like D&D and ACOR.??
Yes! We have more historical books coming! - Andrew
when will red carpet diaries 3 be released? i'm getting antsy waiting on my thomas hunt reunion.
Red Carpet Diaries 3 will be released this summer! - Andrew
Hi guys! Just wondering if we will ever see a non-binary Main Character option, or perhaps even just some more flexibility with character selection?
That's on our radar! I can't promise when or if it will happen, but know that we hear you and appreciate you. ❤️-Jessica
Who’s your favorite villain? Who do you love to hate?
Gaius Augustine! And let me tell you, having just read the last chapter of Bloodbound 2… y’all have no idea what you’re in for - Andrew
SOooOooOoo…. I can’t really tell you yet. But you’re gonna love him as much as I do MWHAHAHA see ya’ll march 15th. -Chelsa
Would you all consider making any more books that take place in historical times rich with mythology (Greece, Africa, the Viking era, etc.?)
I would love to write a Viking book FOR THE GLORY OF ODIN -Kathleen
Does it have to be real mythology? -Chelsa
But seriously, we've got a bunch of books in different genres, settings, and maybe even time periods planned for the future, so stay tuned! In re: Veil of Secrets, it's a standalone book, but that doesn't mean it's the last time we'll explore mystery stories... -Jessica
The Heist: Olympus, coming soon! -Owen
(It is not. This is a joke) -Owen, seconds later

Do you guys keep stats on the choices people make? For example, which was the most chosen ending for Endless Summer, or who’s the most popular LI in a book? If so would you ever reveal some of them?
Nope! We actually don't keep track of individual choices; it'd be way too much data! -Andrew
Is there some sort of metric you use to determine when a book is successful? What does a “successful book” consist of? (Replays, keys, diamonds etc...)
It’s very complicated! We use a broad combination of metrics including things like spend, replays, etc. Also keep in mind that production cost is a big factor! Some books are a lot more expensive and complex than others, so the bar for what a success is can be very different depending.
Can you guys tell which books are replayed the most? Does the server actually let you know if a book is being replayed multiple times? (I’m asking because I have no idea how many times I’ve played TRR, and I’m wondering if they can tell, and think I need a life)
How does the writing team come up with new books? Is it led by an individual's idea or is it a team effort to brainstorm? Does fandom feedback have an effect on what genres are created?
It’s a huge effort that involves a whole bunch of people. It may start with one idea from one person but there’s definitely a long and involved team process that follows! -Chelsa
Would you guys be averse to revisiting a story that ended? Or having the fans vote to bring back a story? Or even being more interactive with fans and having fans vote for sequels?
Anything is possible in the future, but right now, we’re focused on new stories and sequels to some ongoing titles. Also I can’t speak too much to ACOR because I haven’t worked on it, but I can say the team is working very very hard to make sure it has an extremely satisfying ending! -Andrew
Hey! If you love a book, let us know. You can contact us via Facebook message or in-game Support, or tweet at us. We can't always give you the answer you might want, but we really value hearing from you. (At the same time, I'll take the chance to say that spamming us is not the way to go.) -Jessica
Who has been your favourite character to write for? Is there any character who's level of popularity surprised you? And if you could write a book about whatever you wanted what would it be?
Speaking for just myself, I love writing Endless Summer Book 2 and my boy Jake McKenzie. I also LOVE Kamilah from Bloodbound - Andrew
personally have my heart set on a ‘mean girls’ style book, where your main goal is to become the Queen Bee of the fancy new boarding school you’ve been transferred to. - Chelsa
My favorite character to write for was probably Becca from the freshman (see Queen Bee book answer above lol) I personally have my heart set on a ‘mean girls’ style book, where your main goal is to become the Queen Bee of the fancy new boarding school you’ve been transferred to 🤔 -Chelsa
Fave character to write was Sei from TC&TF, 'cuz she’s the fire-slinging badass I wish I could be in real life 🔥🔥🔥 Noah’s popularity shocked me and was honestly pretty awkward because of what I knew was gonna happen at the end of ch. 14 😅 I’m a huge folklore nerd so my dream book is probably a super dark Brothers Grimm-style fairytale with evil fae and quest-giving talking animals. -Kathleen
Recently, my favorite to write has been Sybil from The Heist. Anytime you let me go absurd… -Owen
My fave character to write: Mr. Sinclaire in D&D. The banter between him and MC are so much fun. Briar is the runner up… She’s so boy crazy, but fun. -Rachel
My fave is Griffin! He's such a sweetie, it's fun to write the most genuine, heartfelt lines for him. #TeamGriffin -Jessica
How do you calculate the +Romance interactions for books like Desire and Decorum and TRR as opposed to Endless Summer and AME where the points are more quantifiable?
We have our books totally planned well in advance of launch. On very rare occasions, we'll make adjustments based on what the data is showing us, but that's a rare exception. -Andrew
Jumping in as the Community team to say: We absolutely collect your feedback and comments, and pass them along to our team. But as mentioned in a different reply, the way we implement feedback is more of a big picture, long term view. It's not that we're changing books halfway through based on a comment online. We'd never get books out the door on a weekly basis that way! -Jessica
How to you judge the popularity of a certain book and record the opinions of the players about a book ?
There's a lot of factors at play, including how much it gets played, diamonds and keys spent on it, and so on. And the Community team fills us in on what the fan community thinks as well. I will note that what is or isn't popular on social media doesn't always reflect the bigger picture; there are some books that get very little social media love but are really popular in-game, and vice versa. It’s all quite complicated! - Andrew
What is your favorite or most memorable quote from the books/series you've written?
From D&D 1: “I may be the earl’s natural daughter, but you’re the one acting like a bastard.” -Rachel
I think it was the choice in Bloodbound 1 where you can tell The Baron to sit his punk ass down - Andrew
Ugh this question is too hard. I can’t think of a quote but one of my favorite story moments I contributed to in The Elementalists was we were trying to decide what to do with the unconscious student in swan’s office in chapter 11 (you may know her as Amy Stevenson), and I suggested that swan should just… roll her out of the office. It still cracks me up. -Chelsa
"Atlas pats a hidden pocket at their side, which squelches alarmingly." I mayyy have previously used this exact joke in the original flavor HSS Prime quest when Koh dumps a bunch of slime in her pocket. Also, "Sure, Jan" for the blonde hair in The Elementalists. -Jessica
Hmmm… most recently, it’s “I place faith in nothing... save for the lunar cycle, the loyalty of plants, and the eventual return of the McRib.” As mentioned, I love writing Sybil… Play The Heist with a low Sybil Trust Score to see it ;) -Owen
AUGH I CAN'T DECIDE Pretty much anything Tom says but this one's got a special place in my heart: "Tom: Hold on tight, passengers! Your friendly and enthusiastic tour guide has been playing a lot of Hydro Thunder at the arcade." -Kathleen
Can you confirm or deny if Addison and Kara are related? And related to Mr Sinclaire in some way?
But Mr. Sinclaire has the extra e! Addison and Kara don’t! Also, why does everyone with the same last name have to be related? Not every Smith or Johnson is related! -Rachel
I can’t speak to that… but on a related note, the fact that two different teams made villainous Sterlings was a very funny coincidence, but we decided retroactively, it’s canon. Nathan Sterling is a distant cousin! –Andrew
Hello choices team! Have you ever considered of making a book where the MC is a full on villain?
i would LOVE to - Chelsa
Mwahahahaha! insert maniacal laugh -Rachel
If you had to be trapped in any Choices book for a week, which one would you choose?
It Lives but only if I’m Redfield -Chelsa
I’d 100% choose Rules of Engagement. An all-expense paid cruise in the Mediterranean? Yes please! -Jennifer
Bloodbound, but only if I’m a vampire, or getting fed on by a vampire, or dating a vampire, or just hanging out with a vampire, yeah okay, just Bloodbound - Andrew
Only a week? Oh, that’s a tough one. Probably TRR… but only if I can be MC. Gimme the prince! -Rachel
I could never be in Bloodbound. I hate wearing turtlenecks! JK. I'd want to be in The Elementalists because magick! I'm an Earth-Att. -Jessica
If you could date any LI from any book who would you choose?
Zig one true love forever - Chelsa
Quinn Kelly and Flynn O’Malley - Andrew
Mr. Sinclaire… or the Prince. He’s a prince. - Rachel
Team Tom Sato for lyfe - Kathleen
Kaitlyn! - Jessica
Who’s your favorite villain? Who do you love to hate?
Tie between Hex and Empress Azura (who shines brightest) from TC&TF. I love me a villain who wants to do something VERY BAD but for reasons that kind of make sense -Kathleen
How do you decide on character names? Do you browse for name meanings, search for baby names of X time in Y place, or do the characters sometimes just speak to you (like the TRR corgi spoke through Maxwell) their names?
For me I usually have a direction or kind of vibe I’m trying to convey with a name. I don’t often do a ton of research on character names. Atlas I think just sort of popped into my head as soon as we thought up the character. Aster took a little longer to figure out, we just knew we wanted it to sound floral or nature-related. -Chelsa
What was the saddest thing for you to write (or read) among all of the books?
The endings of Endless Summer 3, no question. I was definitely tearing up throughout the Vaanu ending - Andrew
Oh man. The entire Hex/Whitlock saga that stretched across all three TC&TF books. That scene in book 3 where Whitlock holds Hex at crossbow-point? I was literally crying as I wrote that. -Kathleen
SPOILER ALERT! Writing your mother’s death in D&D. It was like the first thing I wrote for the book, and so… heartbreaking. - Rachel
the initial drafts of the death scenes in it lives 1 were very sad… and very fun for me to write mwahahhahahhahhah - Chelsa
I haven't written anything sad for Choices (yet), but the saddest thing I've written at Pixelberry would be in HSS Prime when Ace de la Cruz admits to you all his greatest fears and insecurities to you near the end of his quest arc. I poured a lot of my own feelings about academic achievement, parental expectations, and the pressure to succeed as the child of immigrants into that scene, and I absolutely cried while writing it. Whew. -Jessica
What do you consider to be the greatest classic novel of all time?
Pride & Prejudice… but I might a bit prejudice… -Rachel
Frankenstein (Mary Shelley invented Sci Fi fight me) - Kathleen
If you were a criminal, which Choices cop would you want to chase you, Dave, Sam, Parker, Damien or Sonia?
TRICK QUESTION! The real answer is Duffy - Andrew
Dave, because he seems like the kind of dude I could distract with flirting and then handcuff to a fence. - Kathleen
What is the hardest part of writing for two different genders?
Hookup scenes bc you can’t just ask your male coworkers how they do that (Jessica does not approve this answer) -Kathleen
What, if anything, leads to new characters being added as love interests like Maxwell?
This happens very very rarely, and it’s usually because it feels natural for the story! For example, Kate wasn’t supposed to be an love interest in Veil of Secrets, but the deeper I got into editing the story, the more it just felt really natural that she should be, like there was this really sweet story of long unrequited love between her and MC brewing just beneath the surface. - Andrew
Which Choices characters would you guys want to be friends with if they existed in the real world?
Miss Parsons or Briar… They’d be the best wingwomen EVER with great sassy comments. -Rachel
Zig, Tom from It Lives, Shreya Mistry, Becca, Kaitlyn, Eris - Chelsa
Ava! Spooky sass buddies for life 🖤 -Kathleen
Hana Lee - Jessica
I wanted to ask what gave y’all the incentive to diversify your characters (namely protagonists and LIs). I feel super blessed to see myself represented in the characters, esp. Andy, but I know plenty of other choice-based/roleplay games don’t go out of their way to include representation, opting to only appeal to their heterosexual female demographic exclusively and they still garner success. Were there any hesitations to broaden representation and were there any concerns about losing some of your audience?
I think that as long as I’ve been here, Pixelberry has been really devoted to diversity of our characters. I tell this story a lot but when I first started here, I worked on the original HWU and for my first quest I asked if I could make the storyline about the character’s struggles with her natural hair and everyone thought it was a great idea! That’s really when I started to feel like this was a great place to work and a place that was working hard to make people’s voices heard. There’s also SO MANY of us here that of all different ethnicities, sexualities, genders that it would be impossible for that not to be reflected in Choices! - Chelsa
Question for the writers: What is your favourite book (that you didn’t contribute to) and why??
I love the It Lives series… such an awesome cast and I love how dark it gets - Andrew
Home for the Holidays! It was such a sweet and simple book, very easy to cozy up with and i finished it in a snap.-Chelsa
AME because it’s got a super fun cast of characters!- jessica
I’m loving TH:M. So much sass! Honorable mention goes to RoD because it gives me major Fast and the Furious feels -Kathleen
TC&TF. It’s the first Choices book I played! And there are DRAGONS! -Rachel
Do you write books with a "canon" route in mind? In ILITW/ILB, for example, when you use the default settings from ILITW, it goes with the "everybody dead, MC took Jane's place" ending.
We try not to write the book to steer players toward a particular ending, but there’s usually one ending that is the one I’d pick if I was writing the story as a novel or TV show. It’s usually the meanest/saddest one 😈 -Kathleen
I think it’s definitely easier when there’s one specific goal you want the main cast to accomplish. Not to spoil anything, but I will say the current plan for the elementalists is to have different ending possibilities. -Chelsa
Who mixes the music? The soundtracks are pure 🔥 🔥
You can thank Daniel for your favorite tracks! He's our Music Director at Pixelberry! -Jessica
Although, I hope, some of your stories obviously haven't been drawn from from real life, have there been instances when you've remembered moments in your life and decided to use them for the stories in-game?
I draw from my own life a lot in my writing. Tom’s fraught experience as a Japanese-American is definitely based on my own, and I also drew pretty heavily on my own experiences of loss and grief when writing for the It Lives series. It can honestly be pretty cathartic, and it’s always super gratifying to see that experience resonate with other people who play our game ❤️-Kathleen
I’m Russian so I delight in constantly putting Russian characters and references in! Nikolai’s my man -Andrew
A lot of bits in LoveHacks drew on my experience growing up in the SF Bay Area, and a lot of The Heist drew upon my experience stealing the crown jewels of Monaco. Write what you know, amirite. - Owen
Who comes up with all the awesome puns in the achievement titles?
Usually each writer comes up with their own achievement puns (my best: Amulet you Finish). If we’re ever having trouble, though, we can just jump on the puns Slack channel and post “I need chair-related puns. Go!” -Kathleen
> Seat Yourself. -Jennifer
My crowning achievement was "Thirst for Knowledge" for Beckett's hookup. Lol. -Jessica
i have a bad habit of just using song titles/lyrics that are relevant to the situation 😬 -Chelsa
The Heist was almost called “Pros & Cons”, which is about as punny as I get. -Owen
Seriously Loving the sexual/racial inclusivity. And just as importantly—loving the introduction of a kickass, take no shit MC (here’s to you, ACOR) It’s so heartfelt to play a character that feels evermore like a reflection of myself, instead of necessarily falling into the innocent ingenue archetype.
Thanks so much! But honestly, I believe we always have room to grow and improve when it comes to representation in Choices, so that's a conditional 'thanks.' - Jessica
My question is how much—or at all—fan reactions & suggestions play a part into the plot processes within the writing room? Is it a sealed room filled with brilliant, creative minds? Or do you guys ever look at Reddit (for example) to see where the wind blows for certain characters & craft potential new storylines using fan inspiration?
We touched on this a little in earlier comments, but: When it comes to fan reactions and feedback, we have a big picture, long-term approach to taking those into account. We generally plan things out in advance -- it's the only way to hit weekly chapter releases! So yes, it's essentially a sealed room. -Jessica

Do anyone of you have secret accounts to stalk the tumbldiscord/fb/reddit fan groups?
No. Since I'm not omniscient, I'll say: Not that I know of. People at PB had better not have any. 🙃 -Jessica
Well, they wouldn’t be secret anymore, now would they? -Rachel
Tea or coffee?
An unhealthy amount of coffee -Andrew
I’m from Portland so my body is composed of roughly 80% nitro cold brew. -Kathleen
A fragrant English Breakfast tea. With crumpets preferably. -Jennifer
These are all on point. -Jennifer
Whiskey. -Rachel
> Wine -Chelsa
I've always wondered, who does your team actually consist of? - meaning, you have writers, illustrators, animators - so what kind of schools/majors did you people finish? I'm wondering if someone finished something completely unrelated to game design and ended up in Pixelberry.
I was an art major at a little liberal arts college, but that’s only because we didn’t have a creative writing major 😛-Kathleen
I was a theatre & journalism double major! -Rachel
I went to a private art school (go, chimeras!) and got a degree in Creative Writing and Literature. My parents thought i wouldn’t be able to get a job but look at me now suckersssssss! jk i love my parents, shoutout to my mom 😘 -Chelsa
English and Japanese double major at a UC school! I also did not own a smartphone prior to joining Pixelberry back in the day. That either tells you I'm super old, or that I'm super bad with technology. You choose. -Jessica
Do you first write the characters and then the story? Or the opposite? What is the order of the elements (characters, plot, conflict) during the writing process?
I usually come up with the basic context/plot for a book and then ask myself what sorts of characters the story needs -Kathleen
What do you enjoy doing in your free time when you aren’t working/writing?
I crochet… I crochet a lot. -Rachel
I don’t understand the question - Andrew
Sleeping. -Jessica
Mostly calligraphy, firedancing, bouldering, and costume making. Occasionally skydiving. -Kathleen

Hi! Can you please give us a 2-chapters book with Daniel the Waiter as Main Character - a story connecting all his appearances in the Choices universe? As an April’s Fools special maybe? :)
Ah, but who’s to say we don’t have already have a story about Daniel’s ancestor, Mr. Danforth, who lived in Grovershire, England back in the 1800s? Jk… But you never know what we have in store! -Rachel
Have you visited this subreddit before? Who was the first person that found the sub?
Yes! I actually came across it first! -Rachel
One of the mods actually reached out to us via Support a while back, so we as the Community team were aware of this subreddit. It's been pretty busy at Pixelberry lately, so I'm sorry that we didn't get around to reaching out sooner! But hey, now we're here! -Jessica
How would you hide a giraffe from the government?
Train it to stand very still in a museum and add a plaque on the wall that says “Giraffe, Mixed Media, 2019” -Kathleen
I would dress him up in a tuxedo, top hat, and monocle, and call him my very tall cousin Geoffrey. -Rachel
Who says I haven't already done it? -Jessica
I would make him a hat out of palm fronds and they would think he’s a tree. -Chelsa
Where'd the company name come from? The Pixelberry plush is so cute - can I kidnap it?
"Oo, the company name. That’s a great question, and it IS kind of a funny story.” -Jennifer
“A long time ago, Oliver had tasked the original PB writers with brainstorming a name for our new company. He was like “Maybe something cute, like Fireberry or Pixelberry”. Then there was an hour of the writers on their bullshit, throwing out things like “Deep Dish Kitten” and “Cookies Wild” and just the sound “Cheerm”… Then we ended up going with Oliver’s original suggestion. “Cheerm” did appear in Most Wanted as the name of the startup though, as an inside joke that we enjoyed very much.” -Owen
What is it with the weird advertisements of Choices I keep seeing? (My friends may have used these ads for teasing me for playing this game …..)
Our marketing team knows what they're doing! They're pretty data-driven, and the ads you see are the ones that do the best. Props to them! - Andrew

2018.01.16 22:33 NapsAndNetflix Country Pop: A History

Hi it's me naps. Since a couple people seemed to like my Life Changes writeup and with Carrie Underwood recently releasing a song with Ludacris, I thought I would write a post on the basic history of country-pop music as a whole because we can only read so many Camila album reviews and Taylor thinkpieces.

The Beginnings (1950's & 1960's):

Up to this point in time country music stuck to it's honky-tonk sound. However, with the rise of rockabilly music in the 1950's, country music was becoming less and less popular. Afraid of country music becoming extinct as a whole, two record executives decided they needed to innovate the sound of country or else they would go broke and jobless. They decided to merge the less popular genres of pop and country to appeal to two groups of listeners at once - which in hopes would keep them afloat and be able to compete with rockabilly music. Obviously, it worked otherwise I wouldn't be writing this post. This created a subgenre known as the Nashville sound. The Nashville sound was basically making country music, but replace the fiddles and steel guitars with the "smooth" elements of pop. The Nashville sound had a band of artists known as "The Nashville A-Team" who became the backing band for many hits from famous artists such as Patsy Cline, Bob Dylan, and eventually Elvis Presley himself - the reason the whole movement started. Since popheads loves main pop girls, the first female singer to break out in this genre was Patsy Cline, who honestly had a super interesting life and you should look it up (car crashes, two marriages, and eventually her dying in an airplane crash at age 30). Her biggest crossover hit was in 1961 with "Crazy" which was a cover of a Willie Nelson song. The Nashville sound started to become challenged by the Bakersfield sound (which was honky-tonk purists, this is the type of music Merle Haggard makes) and Outlaw country (which is the blending of rockabilly and honky-tonk, this is the type of music Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash make). In 1967, Dolly Parton joined Porter Wagoner's television show, replacing Norma Jean. People were highkey pissed Norma was leaving and originally booed Dolly when she was on and would chart "Norma! Norma!" when she was on. Imagine Scrappy-Doo replacing Kate McKinnon on SNL, that's basically what happened. However, unlike Scrappy-Doo people came around on Dolly and started to like her. Dolly continuously served some solo country bops, but overall they all kind of flopped. However, her duets with Porter Wagoner always slayed the charts. Porter Wagoner had stake in Dolly's future and genuinely wanted her to succeed. He was just as frustrated she was flopping as she was. Eventually he convinced her to record Mule Skin Blues and it became her first solo hit! Over the next years she had a six year streak of not leaving the top 10 of the charts, and released what would be iconic songs Coat Of Many Colours(1971), and Jolene(1973). In 1968 Jeannie C. Riley released the song Harper Valley PTA. This song became the first song by a female to go #1 on the country charts and the hot 100.

The 1970's:

I made it sound like country-pop was accepted just like that, however like all change there was most definitely haters. Country purists didn't think it was "real" country music (sound familiar?) and thought it was garbage - while some pop listeners didn't like country influences in their pop music and needed Nat King Cole and Perry Como to keep serving them bops and sex anthems. It wasn't until the mid 1970's that country-pop really had widespread acclaim and acceptance, 20ish years after its creation. Around this time Dolly Parton decided she wanted to take a break from Porter, and in 1974 wrote him I Will Always Love You to originally tell him she was leaving the show and going solo. However, Porter heard the song and was like "ok, this is beautiful. Go solo, and record this", and it became one of the most iconic songs of all time (obviously, mostly because of Whitney, but Dolly's version was wildly successful as well). Around this time, what were known purely as pop singers started to make their Joanne's. Glen Campbells Rhinestone Cowboy in 1975 is known as one of the biggest crossover hits in history, and future Grease star Olivia Newton-John released the grammy winning song Let Me Be There. She also won the CMA for Female Vocalist Of The Year, which was super controversial since she beat out Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Tanya Tucker, and Anne Murray. It's basically what would happen if Zara Larsson went and beat Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Adele, and Ariana Grande for a female vocalist award. There still was some hatred towards country-pop, but it was becoming more and more popular. A super controversial moment was at the CMA's one year after Olivia Newton-John won, Charlie Rich was giving out the award for Entertainer of the Year to John Denver. Not happy that a crossover artist won the award (and on drugs), Charlie Rich proceeded to light the envelope on fire (ps the video is basically unwatchable - skip to 2:10. It's not exciting though to be honest). In 1977 Kenny Rogers came on the scene with Lucille, becoming a massive hit maker. Kenny Rogers pushed the country-pop boundaries like no one had before, working with straight up pop artists. He had songs produced by the Bee-Gees and and Lionel Richie. In 1977 Dolly Parton stopped toeing the line, and moved into straight up pop with Here You Come Again. This was truly her Shake It Off. In 1979 Barbara Mandrell released the song (If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want To Be Right. She became one of the most successful female vocalists in the period, and eventually went on to host the Barbara Mandrell & the Mandrell Sisters show, which was the last successful musical variety show of it's kind. She had R & B artists, pop artists, and country artists featured every week. The show stopped in 1982 due to Mandrell having some health issues.

The 1980's:

So you know how Saturday Night Fever made disco cool? Well in 1980 John Travolta starred in the move Urban Cowboy which made country cool. The soundtrack to the movie spawned 5 singles, 3 of which went #1 on country charts. This made Mickey Gilley super popular for a couple years, since the bar in the movie was his and he contributed music to the movie. His biggest hit was actually a cover of Stand By Me that appeared in the movie, but Gilley went on to produce 9 songs that went #1 on the country charts within the next two years. In 1980 Kenny Rogers released the song Lady and became his first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1981 Dolly Parton went and starred in the movie 9 to 5, which spawned the hit song of the same name. This was Dolly's first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the second time a female was #1 on the country charts and the Hot 100. Also a cute little fun fact - this was the 500th song to hit #1 on the Hot 100. Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton followed this by releasing what has been called the greatest country duet of all time, Islands In The Stream. Islands In The Stream was originally written by the Bee Gees for Marvin Gaye, but was later given to the duo. The song went #1 on multiple charts, including the Hot 100. The family band Alabama, who had seen mild success the past few years, released the song Tennessee River, hitting #1 on the country charts. Alabama would go on to be one of the most successful and iconic country bands of all time. Now while the early 80's saw massive success in the genre, the late 80's were not the same. The only successful crossover artists were Alabama and Dolly Parton. There was massive revival in a traditional country sound, and by 1984 country acts exclusively stuck to country music with no attempt at crossing over. This trend lasted for the rest of the decade.

The 1990's:

Now while the 1980's somewhat flopped in serving country pop bops, the 90's had a massive resurgence in it. Garth Brooks came on the scene. Garth had massive success instantly, and constantly churned out albums. Within the 90's he released 7 albums, 2 holiday albums, and a greatest hits box set. Within the 90's he had 18 singles hit #1 on the country charts. In 1990 Garth Brooks released The Dance and Friends In Low Places back to back. Both are still regarded as two of the most iconic country songs of all time. Partially due to the success Garth Brooks had over the past few years, in 1993 3 future icons released their debut albums. Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, and Shania Twain. However, Faith Hill is the only one who had any sort of success. However, all three artists came back swinging with their second albums. In 1994 Tim released his second album Not A Moment Too Soon which went #1. In 1995 Faith released her sophomore album It Matters To Me which also saw moderate success. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill started dating, and got married in 1996. This marriage has made them an A-List celebrity couple and had both of them rise in fame. However, the real winner was Shania. In 1995 Shania released her second album The Woman In Me which received critical and commercial acclaim. Shania's lead single off of her second album was Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under. This song was a smash, hitting #11 on country charts in the US and #1 on the Canadian country charts. The Woman In Me spawned 8 singles, 3 of which went #1 on the country charts.
1997 is arguably the biggest year in country music history. In 1997 Shania Twain released her album Come On Over. This album went on to become the highest selling country album of all time, the highest selling album for a female of all time, the best selling album for a Canadian of all time, and overall the sixth highest selling in the USA of all time. The 16 song tracklist spawned 12 singles, all of which performed very successfully, and giving her her most successful song of all time You're Still The One. This also had what became a cult classic and her most notable song of all time, Man! I Feel Like A Woman!. One album alone can't make 1997 the most iconic year in country music, Billy Joel and Bob Dylan both released the song Make You Feel My Love which is later famously covered by Adele. Also in 1997 LeAnne Rimes released the song How Do I Live. This song stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for 69 weeks, which at the time was the longest single ever to do so. Jason Mraz's I'm Yours surpassed this in 2008. How Do I Live was in the top 5 for 25 consecutive weeks, and held this record until current living icons the_chainsmokers broke it with Closer. On Billboards All Time Top 100, it is currently #4 and the only single in the top 10 to not have hit #1.
In 1998, the Dixie Chicks saw massive commercial success with their album Wide Open Spaces. The Dixie Chicks would go on to receive a ton of critical and commercial success over the next decade. Also in 1998 Faith Hill released the song This Kiss as the lead single for her album Faith. This Kiss would go on to become a cult classic among pop and country listeners. One year later in 1999, the Dixie Chicks and Faith both released albums again. The Dixie Chicks released their album Fly). Fly went #1 on the Billboard 200, spawned 8 singles, and won 2 grammy awards. Faith Hill released her album Breathe. Breathe also went #1 on the Billboard 200, it spawned 4 singles, and won 3 Grammy awards. The title track Breathe peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, although not hitting #1 it was #1 on the 2000 Year End list. This song was also super robbed in the Billboard Year End rate, coming at 32 with a 6.58 average. Overall, country pop was very successful and influential throughout the late 90's.

The 2000's:

Ok, this is when we get to the part most of you guys were actually alive for and remember. In 2000 Lee Ann Womack released the single I Hope You Dance. This peaked at #1 on the country charts and #14 on the Hot 100. Lonestar released Amazed, which hit #1 on the Hot 100. This was the first country song to hit #1 on the Hot 100 since Islands In The Stream did in 1983.
In 2002 the Dixie Chicks went back to a more bluegrass sound with their album Home, which spawned fan favourite singlesLong Time Gone and Travelin' Soldier. In 2003 before performing Travelin' Soldier at a concert in London, the lead singer Natalie Maines said "Just so you know, we're on the good side with y'all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas". This was in regards to George W. Bush's invasion of Iraq. Seeing as the stereotypical country music listener is a republican from the south, just about all country radio stations pulled the song from their rotation. The boycott from radio stations and angry fans caused their current single, Landslide, to go from #10 on the Hot 100 to off the charts within 2 weeks. The Dixie Chicks were blacklisted from the country music community. They received multiple death threats, and had to ensure all their concerts had metal detectors because of this. Two DJ's in Colorado were literally fired for playing the Dixie Chicks on the air. In hindsight, this is all kind of hilarious as most Americans would say Bush wasn't a great president, and the current president gets dragged by every celebrity in existence. At the ACM awards that year, the Dixie Chicks received a ton of boo's when they were nominated for Entertainer Of The Year. It was basically what would happen if Melanie Martinez was nominated for the most esteemed award at an awards show right now. Through all of this, the Dixie Chicks stood by their comments and didn't back down. One year later in 2006 they released the song Not Ready To Make Nice. It's an extremely powerful song in which they discuss the events of the controversy with lyrics such as ""And how in the world can the words that I said send somebody so over the edge that they'd write me a letter saying that I better shut up and sing or my life will be over". This was followed up by their last album Taking The Long Way. This was their Reputation album, except it received universal love and acclaim. It went on to win 5 Grammy awards, including Album Of The Year.
While all of this was happening, the artist who spawned this post came onto the scene. Carrie Underwood went onto the wildly famous show American Idol. She was in the final against Bo Bice (remember him?), and won pretty handily to be quite honest. American Idol used to give the final 2 a single to sing, and if they won it was released to radio. Well, Carrie's version of Inside Your Heaven was released as a single and is to this day the last country song to hit #1 on the Hot 100. Unlike just about every other Idol winner, Carrie followed this up with her successful single Jesus, Take The Wheel which won her two grammy awards. She released her debut album Some Hearts in 2005, and the single Before He Cheats in 2006. To this day it is one of her most successful singles, gaining her multiple awards and cementing her place in country music. Before He Cheats is the eighth best selling country song of all time. Also in 2006, popheads god Taylor Swift released her debut album. The album didn't get her any awards or Hot 100 #1's, but we all know she turns out just fine on those fronts. That same year, Taylors future tourmates Rascal Flatts covered the song What Hurts The Most. The next year in 2007, Miranda Lambert released her sophomore album Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Miranda had previously released the album Kerosene, but did not see any noteworthy success until Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. In 2008, Taylor released the Grammy winning album Fearless, making her the younger person ever to win the Grammy for Album Of The Year at the age of 20. Fearless was the first album to win the American Music Award, Academy of Country Music Award, Country Music Association Award, and Grammy Award for Album of The Year - making it the most awarded album in the history of country music. The same year Lady Antebellum released their debut album. It received a bunch of nominations for awards, but since Taylor cleaned house on of them they didn't win anything.

The 2010's

In 2009 Lady Antebellum released their lead single from their 2010 album, Need You Now. The song won them four grammy awards, and surpassed Taylor's Love Story as the most downloaded country song of all time. Luke Bryan released the ho anthem Country Girl (Shake It For Me Now) for his third album Tailgates & Tanlines. This song was everywhere, and is still played everytime I go to a country bar. The entire album is full of thought-free, fun party songs that were very successful on the country charts. It also known as the beginning of the Bro-Country phase. Bro-Country is a subgenre of country music that is just carefree music made by men, usually crossing off at least one of the "cliché country song" checkboxes of talking about trucks, girls, or drinking beer.
2012 is when we hit a weird time in country music. The popularity of Bro-Country surges with Florida-Georgia Line's debut single Cruise. Cruise became the longest running number 1 single on the country charts, hitting 24 weeks. This caused Bro-Country to hit peak popularity, with artists like Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, and Jake Owen to follow suit and migrate their sound into a more Bro-Country area to sell more. Seeing as Bro-Country is very successful, it has a lot of people who love it. However, Bro-Country has also formed a very vocal fanbase of haters often calling it not "real" country (throwback to 1970 feuds). While the popularity of Bro-Country was happening, Taylor Swift released her "country" album Red. We all know Red was insanely successful, and was the transition period into making her a popstar. Red mixed country songs with pop songs, some not even trying to be country like I Knew You Were Trouble.
Over the next years Bro-Country stays wildly popular amongst listeners. In 2014 Sam Hunt releases his debut album Montevallo. Coincidentally, it dropped the same day 1989 dropped. Personal side note: I remember going to Target to buy both albums that day and 1989 was obviously easy to find, but I couldn't find Montevallo. I asked a worker if they had it in the back and he just said "who's Sam Hunt?" and pretended to look but clearly didn't. The album was actually extremely hard to find on CD for a while, how times change. Seeing the popularity of hip hop rise, Sam Hunt innovated the sound of Bro-Country and merged the country pop sound with hip hop. Over the next few years, country artists started to experiment with just how far into pop they could go while still being considered country music. Songs like Thomas Rhett's Vacation, and Keith Urban/Carrie Underwoods The Fighter started becoming more and more common. This all builds up to Sam Hunt releasing the song Body Like A Backroad in 2017. Body Like A Backroad has received a lot of criticism for not being "country", however it still broke MULTIPLE chart achievements despite that. It was #1 on the country charts for 34 weeks, making it the longest #1 song in history.

The Future:

Ok, so now what? Well, I don't really know. Country music is currently having an identity crisis. Half the artists have become straight up pop artists who throw a backing guitar in to qualify for country radio, while there is a sort of "anti country pop" movement happening causing outlaw artists like Chris Stapleton to rise to fame. As pop music evolves, I see country music evolving with it. Mainstream pop music has been moving towards more hiphop influences as of late, leaving country artists to safely make more "classic" sounding pop songs to fill in the gap that has been missing. However, some artists that have been on the country pop train are moving towards a more traditional country sound. Chase Rice was arguably the worst offender of Bro-Country (he WROTE Cruise by Florida Georgia Line and his solo output was very similar), and his recent 2017 album was very traditional sounding. When listening to country radio, you either get a very strong country sound with Chris Stapleton, Eric Church, and lately Miranda Lambert; or you get a top 40 pop song like Meant To Be or Craving You. Even artists who toed the line on country pop have been choosing a direction to go in - either more pop as seen with The Champion or back to a more traditional country sound as we'll see on Dierks Bentley's upcoming album.
Personally, I love both directions so I am sort of indifferent on where it goes. It has been interesting to see country music evolve from the honky-tonk sound from the 1950's, into Bebe Rexha being a #1 debut on the country charts. However, less popular artists have been going the traditional country route and it's sad to see it die.
Anyways, if you read this: thank you but get a fucking life lol.

2017.01.02 22:08 mifflin50 Overlooked Albums of 2016 Wrap Up

This is it! 2016 was a really good, deep year for music in my opinion, but there's always stuff that gets lost in the shuffle. Stuff that you don't find until the end of the year when all the lists come out and even some “underrated albums" lists come out. My only aim with this post is to highlight and recommend some albums for you guys that you may not have heard of, or just haven't given the time to yet. These are all albums that I have posted about before, plus a bunch of albums I wanted to talk about but didn't have the time to, and without further ado:
Best of What I Didn't Get to:
This is a really fun garagey, lo-fi rock EP. I don't listen to many EP's but this one caught my eye as Bandcamp’s album of the day one day and they’ve pimped it out a few times on Twitter since giving it that title.
RIYL: Car Seat Headrest, Waxahatchee, LVL UP
This is some pretty standard emo with a little post rock and a little pop punk in the mix as well. It probably won't blow your mind, but there are some really solid choruses and songs on here like “Sensation” and “St. Cecelia’s”. “I don't know what's worse / The fact that you're gone / Or the fact that it hurts.” Just classic stuff man. If you like most of Broken World Media’s catalogue you'll probably like what Animal Flag is doing here.
RIYL: Dear Leap, early Modern Baseball
Another solid pop punk record from a band that has since gone on hiatus. This is just some well-written indie rock that's really listenable and has a perfect autumn or late summer vibe as well. Mathy guitars, a touch of post rock even, Somos did it again.
RIYL: Sorority Noise, Into It. Over It., The Hotelier
Chris Farren is so sweet. He uses brass gently, his voice and tone is conversational, and even on songs like “Everything’s My Fault” he doesn't come off as whiny or even passive aggressive, but rather tongue-in-cheek, smiling through the accusation, because you can't really stay mad at this guy for long.
RIYL: Jeff Rosenstock, Signals Midwest
If the Snail Mail EP from earlier piqued your interest then Out of the Garden should as well. It reminds me a lot of Ex Hex’s album from a couple years ago, and this is just solid, hook filled indie rock with a garage edge, but production clean enough to be easy to listen to.
RIYL: Ex Hex, Sleater Kinney
This isn’t strictly “indie”, but Bandcamp had it as their favorite album of the year, and I can see why. I hadn't listened to it until this month, but I had heard “Sensation” sampled on some song (seriously please help me remember what rap song samples that hook). These ladies really can sing and craft a great pop song, and though for me it's a liittttllee long, it’s a really good pop/R&B record and I think King will be a much bigger name in a very short time.
RIYL: Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Dawn Richard
If this were /emo and not /indieheads then this album wouldn't even belong on this list. Those guys are crazy for Mom Jeans and so I had to dive into this thing to see what all the hype (and memes) was about. What you get is a really sweet, self-deprecating, emo record with great riffs, lyrics, and even a Bob's Burgers cameo. They use horns at the perfect times and some of the couplets to open the album really hit home if you’re in a post-break-up funk. (Also Mom Jeans aren't as good as Jank I’m sorry).
RIYL: Jank, Marietta, You Blew It!
Andy Shauf has a pretty odd vocal delivery where he seems to want to string everysinglewordtogether, but it also kinda works for him and there's some really beautiful instrumentation on this album too with strings, guitar, horns, and good group harmonization on a lot of the cuts off this album.
RIYL: Kevin Morby, Steve Gunn, Margaret Glaspy
This is a really sweet, sometimes mathy, indie rock record. There's some folk and emo influence with male and female back and forth vocals as well. The riff throughout “Rogue Island” is nuts. This album rocks and then it might make you cry, but it’s all really really good.
Shouts to ZiggyShoegazer for this one. James Supercave makes desceptively complex synth rock and I really wish now that I had listened to this album more and given it more praise in a proper post because Supercave really deserves more spotlight for what he's doing here. It's so emotionally moving for a synth pop record and I hope some other people really come to enjoy it too.
RIYL: Sales, Islands, Future Islands
This doesn’t really rock quite as much as some of You Blew It!’s past work, but instead they focus more on atmosphere and constant interplay between guitars which works really well for the band. It makes for a more affecting experience on some of the darker cuts like “Forecasting”. It’s another really solid You Blew It! record and though they’ve changed sound a bit I don't think fans of their past albums would dislike this new record.
RIYL: Dads, Everyone Everywhere
So far this is kind of an emo heavy list, but in my defense there were a lot of good emo albums that came out this year, and not a lot of them get talked about. I wasn't in love with Tiny Moving Parts’s new album and I haven’t been a big fan of their past work since I usually find it a little too derivative, but Celebrate is at least much more focused and if you want to hear some crazy math rock and great riffs for a half hour this could be your stuff, and you could do a lot worse.
RIYL: highly caffeinated American Football, Prawn
This is another really good indie rock/emo record, but I just want to point out how Microwave really knows how and when to scream. I get turned off by screamo most of the time but Microwave really pick their spots and sound good when they want to belt it out to release that extra emotion. I’m telling you it was a pretty solid year for emo and alternative rock.
RIYL: Pup, Fireworks, old Title Fight
This thing is absolutely balls-to-the-wall crazy, insane jazz music. I mean listen to this. That was nuts. If you like really experimental African jazz then this is probably your shit, and if you don't give the first track a shot just because man that track is INSANE one of my favorite jazz records of the year for sure.
RIYL: Kamasi Washington, BadBadNotGood
These guys kinda sound like the Weakerthans, but like a 2016 emo revival version of The Weakerthans. If you like The Weakerthans and weren't feeling the John K Samson album from this year, then give You Can Win a Few a shot. (Also check out that John K Samson album though it's pretty good.)
RIYL: The Weakerthans, John K Samson
Best of the Rest
This begins the wrap-up portion. I’ve made a longer post about all of these albums in previous Overlooked Albums posts on this sub and I still like all of these, but this group was just below my 10 favorite Overlooked Albums
These guys really deserve more views. They were at like <1000 when I randomly found them on Spotify and I could really see a lot of people on this sub digging The Exquisites. The lead singer’s voice is really unique as he wails and yelps his way, endearingly, through this debut, and the melodies are infectious. Look for these guys to maybe pop a little more on their next effort.
RIYL: Hop Along, The Obsessives
Again, I don't listen to many EP’s but I had to see what Sioux Falls, now Strange Ranger would do after their name change, and after their fantastic, sprawling debut, Rot Forever. They definitely have changed their sound here, and it’s almost shoegazy at points, with a much slower tempo, and more washed guitars as opposed to the bombastic energy of Rot Forever. This is still really good stuff though, and I'm really looking forward to their next full-length effort as Strange Ranger.
If Modest Mouse talked slower and were a little more chill than angry, they may have ended up sounding like LVL UP do on Return to Love. This one has surprisingly popped up on a couple year end lists which is nice to see and I'll definitely be looking forward to what they do next, especially because they're now on Sub Pop.
RIYL: Sioux Falls, Strange Ranger, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Cage the Elephant
This was another album recommended to me by someone on indieheads and it's just a really solid, direct garagey psych rock album. The opener is one of my favorite psych rock songs of the year and the whole record has really solid songwriting.
RIYL: Crocodiles, The Kinks
David Crosby is still doing it man. His voice sounds surprisingly good and these smooth rock songs have well layered instrumentation that will probably have you shocked to hear that Crosby is already 75 years old. He's a legend and if you like a lot of his past work or CSNY then you'll probably find something to like in this album. It's not super showy or fast paced but it finds beauty in the little things and doesn't slack on creative song structures even at Crosby's advanced age.
RIYL: Graham Nash, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Crosby and Nash, The Byrds
This will definitely come off as just bro-punk to a lot of people but I really enjoyed this record. It gave me a few good laughs, it's self-aware enough to the point where you're laughing along with it instead of at it. There’s skateboarding when you're too old to still look cool doing it, there's some shots at pretentious old high school friends, and there's definitely lots of beer and pizza. It's short and sweet, give Pkew Pkew Pkew a shot.
RIYL: Pup, Jeff Rosenstock
Songs like "Postcard" and “Is It So Much to Adore?” really made this album worth listening to for me. It's pretty straight forward alternative rock with washed out guitars and a vocal delivery that might be a little too laid back for some, but I think it fits with the vibe of the music.
Dear Leap honestly make some of the better post rock/emo music you will hear, even if the lead singer is trying a little too hard to sound like Mike Kinsella, but I mean let's be honest, who isn’t?
RIYL: Owen, Football Etc.
If you’re reading this you probably know Dr. Dog at least a little bit and I’m glad they made this album even if it isn't their best work ever. It's their one concept album and there are some legitimately good songs on it, if you're a fan I think it's worth checking out.
RIYL: Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, The Dodos
The Beautiful Game really made me smile right out the gate and songs like “Animal Spirits” are just infectious and completely ridiculous to the point where you may find yourself smiling and snapping along too.
RIYL: Jackson 5, Funkadelic
I’ll admit that I don't love Peach as much now as when I first heard it, but it's one of the few on here that has really gotten a surprising amount of love on some more rock oriented lists and I can see why. Culture Abuse bring a noise rock sound to tunes that you'd except to find on the beach and they pull it off surprisingly well, even if it's not what I'm always in the mood to listen to. I believe even Steven Hyden had this album in his top 50.
God this album destroyed me. I still really love it, but it didn’t quite crack my top ten for this list. It's really hauntingly beautiful singer songwriter music with strings, acoustic guitar, and lots of layers on almost every song except the closer, “Real Big Sky”, which is a bare acoustic guitar ballad with Rundle pouring her heart out over her miscarriage. I’d recommend Marked for Death to anybody who just needs a good cry.
RIYL: Carrie and Lowell, Mothers, Marissa Nadler
This is Jake Ewald from Modern Baseball’s solo project and if you liked Holy Ghost or Modern Baseball’s past work then there’s a very good chance that you'll dig Slaughter Beach, Dog. If there are any key differences between this and Modern Baseball I would say that Jake is a little bit more reflective here and the instrumentation is maybe a little slower and contemplative, but Ewald still brings great hooks and memorable choruses, another album that just missed my top ten.

Top Ten Overlooked Albums of 2016
10. Operators - Blue Wave
I think this was the very first album I wrote about on /indieheads and I still have a real soft spot Blue Wave. Operators is the side project of Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade fame, except this is synth laden, but dark, dance music instead of his usual indie folk rock. “Cold Light” is still a bop and it's a pretty consistent record of memorable, slightly depressing dance tunes. I also think my writeup for this one is one of my better ones so check it out if you like.
9. Mothers - When You Walk a Long Distance You Are Tired
Man I still love this record. Mothers is from my neck of the woods too which gives me a certain feeling of kinship with the Athens, Georgia band and they just make absolutely beautiful music. “It Hurts Until It Doesn’t" is a wonderfully catchy piece of pop, but elsewhere on the album you'll find soaring strings and operatic vocal performances that will just stop you in your tracks. It takes some listens to get into, but it's really worth it, and I hope Mothers really get some recognition from this album.
8. Half Waif - Probable Depths
I’m really glad I found this album because I think a few people who read my post really enjoyed it and that's really all I'm trying to do. Half Waif creates really gorgeous electronic music to pair with her effortlessly engaging voice. “Turn Me Around” was high on my songs of the year list and really the entire thing reads like a cohesive narrative from start to finish, but for more on that you'll have to go back to my post, because I don't have the time to focus on that here. Listen to Half Waif, she shouldn't just be toiling away on Bandcamp.
7. Fox Wound - In Passing, You Too Faded
This is kind of cheating because I'm now realizing that I never formally wrote about Fox Wound in one of the Overlooked Albums posts, but it's definitely overlooked and I definitely like it more than almost any other under covered album from 2016. Fox Wound make sort of screamo influenced post hardcore/post rock and it's better than almost any other post hardcore band I’ve heard over the past few years. “No Johns” and "Waveshine" are just beautiful and so emotive they fuck me up every time I listen to them and I hope they can give that sensation to anyone else who happens upon this album, I really think they've got something special here.
6. Abi Reimold - Wriggling
If anyone on this top ten list really has a chance to get big in the next couple years it might just be Abi Reimold. I cowld see her becoming a real critical darling with her uniquely dark style of post punk music. She doesn't really sound like anyone else and she can really change her sound throughout a record like she does on Wriggling. She's extremely versatile and I'm just excited for what could possibly be next for her.
5. Camp Cope - Camp Cope
I’m putting an asterisk by this one, because though I wrote about it, and though it was definitely overlooked and slept on when I did so, it has since become fairly popular on the subreddit. Camp Cope’s brand of personal and emotional, Hop Along-esque singer songwriter music is really refreshing and rewarding. There’s a story to all of their songs and their vocalist is just out of this world at moments. You may have heard of Camp Cope by now, and for that I’d at least like to take partial credit (no for real these girls are amazing their hard work is why they’re being talked about more and more and it’s awesome to see).
4. Posture and the Grizzly - I Am Satan
This is easily my “fuck my ex” emo album of the year. The Hotelier is the best emo/indie rock record of the year, but if stereotypical emo is to just lay into your ex with your guitar and nasal voice then Posture and Grizzly take the cake for stereotypical emo album in the best way possible. This is the best produced pop punk album I've ever heard and I think one of the band members is actually part of The World Is a Beautiful Place… as well, which explains the post rock elements and two post rock interludes. Seriously though, if you've just gone through a break-up or are just looking to get angry and in your feelings, I Am Satan is the way to go. It’s so relistenable too, man I love this album.
3. Into It. Over it. - Standards
I don't even know what else I can say about this album. Evan Weiss has really created his masterpiece with this album and I think people are finally taking notice of his work in a real way. Into It Over It is emo, sure, but I think just about anyone who likes indie rock would enjoy this record. There's American Football-esque mathy guitar work, crisp vocals from Weiss, and the best lyrics and songwriterng of his career on Standards as well. There's a ton to love and get lost in, especially the Death Cab-like slow centerpiece, "Your Lasting Image”.
2. Slingshot Dakota - Break
I just got done gushing about this album a couple days ago when I gave Break its own post, but I could go on about this album forever. It’s just so infectiously catchy and sweet and confident. I’ve hardly been able to stop listening to it since I first heard it a few weeks ago and there are so many moments worth coming back to on this album whether it's the opening to “Lewlyweds” the coda on “Monocracy" or the chorus on “Too Much”. Slingshot Dakota have a lot going on here and anyone who loves indie rock should give this album a listen or two or three or fifteen.
1 . Jank - Versace Summer
Jank were a wild ride. They were only together for about twelve months, released two EP’s and now they’ve gone and broken up. But what they left with us was some of the best, most fun, and most energetic emo/pop punk music that I think I've ever heard. It’s a shame these guys haven't caught on on this sub very much, but all twenty minutes of Versace Summer are well worth your time. The title track is one of my favorite songs of the year and there's simply no band in this style that brings it like Jank. They'll make you emotional, make you shout along with them, and even make you laugh with their odd and zany sense of humor. I’ll miss you Jank.
